The black bear is able to live close to man. It likes to live in forests or sometimes open meadows.  There are about 400,000 to 750,000 black bears on the earth. Black bears get up to 35 to 40 inches when the are on all four legs.   When they stand up on the hind legs, they can get as tall as 4 1/2 to 6 feet tall. Black bears usually live to be about 25 years old.  Black bears have a big thick belly area, 4 legs, a short stubby tail, and curved claws to climb up trees. Black bears can run up to 25 miles an hour.
