Shaker Village Black Smith

Here we see the blacksmith work station.  Note that there is a chimney coming up from the roof of the building.  In the background, you see the main barn of the Shaker community.  black smith.jpg (34069 bytes)

The blacksmith knew that there are two different fires he can build.  If he wanted to heat the middle of the iron, he made a flat fire.  This way, he could lay the iron down flat. Now, if he wanted to heat the tip of the iron, he could pile the coal up for a deep fire.

The blacksmith brushes the iron when it is hot.  The surface of the iron becomes shiny.
