Shaker Village Farm

barn entrance.jpg (24629 bytes) From April to October, the Shaker farm is cultivated and cared for just like it was more than a century ago.  Plowing was done with horses and oxen.  The milking was done by hand.

At the door way of the main barn, you see what a typical Shaker farmer would have worn.  Notice how simply made the pitch forks and rakes are at the right of the door way.

milking shorthorn.jpg (27362 bytes) Shakers raised Milking Shorthorn cattle.  They used as many parts of the cow as they could.  The Shakers were not ones to waste anything.  Milk, meat and leather products were some of the things the Shakers raised this type of cattle for.
