The broom, a common household tool, has become a symbol of the Shaker society.  Shakers were noted for their cleanliness and orderliness.  The Shaker brooms was originated by Theodore Bates, a New York Shaker.

Shaker brooms are produced in a number of shapes and sizes.  They became in high demand because of their excellent quality and reasonable price.  In the early 1800's, broom-making became a significant trade for the Shakers.

The Kentucky Shakers of Pleasant Hill  were making over 50,000 flat brooms by the 1850's.   This became quite the source of income for them.

Today, brooms are still made at Pleasant Hill in the Shaker Village.  They are made just as they were over a century ago.
