SOS Program - Saturday Opportunity at Stonewall
(Saturday School)
Stonewall’s staff is committed to helping children
succeed academically. Late and/or incomplete work adversely affects student
success and grades. To help each child complete the required curriculum with
satisfactory grades, we have designed a program that will address the problem of
late and/or incomplete work for grades three through five for the first nine
weeks and grades two through five for the remainder of the year.
The SOS program provides an opportunity for students in
grades two through five to complete any missing or unsatisfactory assignments.
Failure to participate in this program will result in receiving a zero for the
missing assignments. Students who fail any core content area may not promote to
the next grade level.
The SOS program, staffed by a certified teacher at a ratio of
approximately 1 to 15, will be held on Saturdays from 8:00-11:00 a.m. in the
library at Stonewall Traditional Elementary.
The homeroom teacher will provide a list of assignments to be
completed. One copy will be given to the student and another copy will be given
to SOS personnel. The student is to complete the work that has not been turned
in or revise work that received an unsatisfactory grade. No penalty is incurred
by revising work already turned in and determined to be
"unsatisfactory." Assignments previously not turned in at all, and
completed in SOS, will be considered late and ten points will be deducted from
the grade earned by the student while in the SOS Program. Students will attend
the entire three hour session and are responsible for bringing all work
including extra reading material in the event they finish early.
With teacher recommendation, students meeting the following
criteria will be expected to attend the SOS Program:
- Any student in grades two through five having a cumulative grade point average below C in mathematics, reading, spelling, language, social studies or science, generally occurring as a result of missing or late assignments or an incomplete writing portfolio. This includes both short and long-term assignments and projects.
- Students who have turned in unsatisfactory work in the preceding week.
- Students missing assignments in the preceding week.
A written notice will be sent home by the child’s
homeroom teacher no later than the Wednesday prior to the Saturday that the
child is to participate in the program. A follow-up home message will also be
given by school personnel prior to Saturday.
Parents/guardians will be responsible for transportation to
and from school. SOS will be held only on Saturdays when there is school on the
preceding Friday. Doors will open to accept students at 7:45 AM and will be
locked at 8:00 AM. Students arriving after 8:00 AM will not be allowed entry and
will receive a zero for any unfinished assignments.
If a student disrupts SOS with any misbehavior or refuses to
follow teacher directions, the parent will be contacted to pick-up his/her
child, and a zero will be given on the assignment.
If school is canceled because of inclement weather on the
Friday before a scheduled Saturday, the session will be canceled. A schedule of
Saturday sessions will be sent home each semester.
Funding for SOS will be provided by Extended School Services.
