POLICY 3.1

STUDENT PLACEMENT

Students will be placed in classrooms for the next year according to the following guidelines:

Homeroom teachers will be asked to fill out a form developed by the principal. This form will be considered confidential information. On this form, teachers will:

Rank their classes academically by sex and race.

Identify the following groups of students:

Quest

Primary Focus Groups

Special Education (LD, BD, EMH)

Speech

Identified AD/HD

Referred for special services but not yet placed

Students needing extra assistance

Disciplinary problems

Identify students who should not be placed together.

Make further comments if an area is not covered on the form (e.g. Students who will be moving).

On a form developed by the principal, parents will be given an opportunity to request a teacher during the month of March, but with the understanding that the request is not a definite commitment. Teacher preference forms will be made available to parents enrolling new students. This form will be considered confidential information.

On the basis of this information, the principal will assemble the classes. Classes will be balanced by:

Academic ability

Sex

Race

Disciplinary needs

Other areas identified by teachers or parents as it relates to a particular child’s placement.

Students enrolling between the time the principal completes the class lists and the end of the school year will be assigned by the principal to a classroom with respect to the demographics outlined in Section III.

Students enrolling during the summer will be assigned two weeks prior to the school year starting. Letters will be mailed to the parents advising them of their child’s teacher. If information is received from the sending school, this information will be used in making the placement with respect to the demographics outlined in Section III.

Students enrolling during the school year, or those students enrolling in the summer about whom no information is received, will be placed in the appropriate class with the fewest number of students unless, in the principal’s judgment, there are mitigating circumstances where such a placement would not be in the best interest of the child’s education.

Teachers will receive their new class lists one week prior to the end of the school year. The new teacher’s name will be placed on the final report card.

TEACHER PREFERENCE REQUEST FORM

This form may be used to express a teacher preference for the next school year. We will attempt to honor your request, but please understand that this cannot be a definite commitment. This request will be used as one of several criteria to assemble a particular classroom.

Please read the following guidelines before requesting a teacher for your child.

Please do not request merely because your child wants to be in a room with a particular friend.

Sometimes a teacher of your choice will resign or transfer to another grade level. If a second or third choice is indicated, we will attempt this placement. Otherwise, the assignment will be made in the same way other pupils are placed.

Requests will not be accepted before March 25 or after April 4.

Return this form in a sealed envelope personally or by mail addressed to the principal. Do not send it by your child. Requests returned by your child will not be accepted.

All requests will be held in the strictest confidence.

Please add any comments on the back of this page.
