Climate, Equity, and Guidance Committee

Time:  2:30-3:30 P.M.

Members present:  D. Barnes, T. Butler, D. Banton, S. Clark, J. Whitaker

Members absent:  S. Britt, B. Burton

The committee reviewed the section of the Consolidated Plan that deals with equity.  The committee discussed the two areas of concern: reading and mathematics.  Here are some of the changes discussed and additions for reading:

q       Increase time with ESL

q       Parent awareness of reading scores and problems during parent/teacher conferences

q       Provide high school student tutors at school

q       Continue with ESS referrals

Additions and changes for mathematics:

q       Include computer/technology and mathematic games in the daily curriculum

q       Provide opportunities for contests in class or between classes

q       Use of multiplication tapes, records, CD-ROM math facts

q       Parents providing practice on basic math facts at home

q       Include more hands-on activities using manipulatives

The committee discussed the role of parents in helping to implement our goals in reading and math.

The committee discussed the need to change the 25 percent reduction in the achievement gap between majority and minority students by May 2002 to 15 percent reduction.

The committee requests a clarification on whether students who have an IEP or a 504 Plan are included when calculating the achievement gap between minority and majority student population.
