Note From the Principal

Each year, the Stonewall PTA provides this handbook to our parents.  It contains essential information that will help make the school year go smoothly.  Please take the time to read it so that you will be familiar with the school policies and procedures as it affects you and your child.
Please carefully review the policies on discipline, dress code, homework, and Saturday School. We will continue our emphasis on basic skills in all curricular areas that have made our school a state leader in the academic achievement of our students. We have established the goal of having all students working on grade level or above in reading and mathematics. Of course, this can only be done with the school and the home working together. We look forward to working with all our parents to achieve this goal.
The Stonewall PTA has a rich tradition of service to our students, teachers, and community.  I encourage all parents to join our PTA and take part in the many exciting activities and programs they have planned for this year. All volunteers to assist in these activities are welcome.
If you have any questions about the information presented in this book, please feel free to call me or any of the parents listed.  I, and the staff of Stonewall Elementary School, look forward to working with you and our PTA to make this a great year.

  James E. McCaw, Principal

Stonewall's PTA is very strong and active.  The backbone of our organization is community teamwork.  Our focus is to improve communications, provide more opportunities, encourage, inspire, and help protect and promote the welfare of our children.   With this in mind, I encourage everyone to get involved and be an active part of our PTA.  The success of our organization depends on many volunteers working together from planning activities to putting those activities into action.
Our PTA Board consists of many different chair positions.  We hold a PTA Board meeting on the fourth Tuesday of each month at 6:30 PM in the school Library.  These are open meetings and all are welcome.

PTA OBJECTIVES

As determined by the National Congress of Parents and Teachers, the PTA objectives are as follows:
1.      To promote the welfare of students and youth in home, school, church and community.
2.      To raise the standards of home life.
3.      To secure adequate laws for the care and protection of students and youth.
4.      To bring into closer relation the home and the school, that parents and teachers may cooperate intelligently in the training of the child.
5.      To develop between educators and the general public such united efforts as will secure for every child the highest advantages in physical, mental and spiritual education.

  BELIEF STATEMENT

  1.      We believe that all students can be successful in school.
  2.      We believe that success in learning in school results in future success.
  3.      We believe that students do best in a safe, caring, structured environment and that we must create such environment for our students.
  4.      We believe that students, parents, extended families, educators and the community share in the responsibility for learning.

 MISSION STATEMENT

The mission of Stonewall Elementary School is to provide an enriched academic program in which a diverse population of students is enabled to strive for excellence beyond basic skill mastery.  This will be accomplished through a cooperative effort of parents, teachers, and students in a disciplined atmosphere.

TIPS FOR SUCCESS IN SCHOOL

We want your child to have the best possible education.  Here are some things you can do to help reach this goal:

  • Review and encourage good study habits.  Encourage them to do their best.
  • Set up a specific place and time for studying/homework.   Equip the area with needed supplies.
  • Encourage them to do their work as early in the day or evening as possible.
  • Be available to help, especially for younger students, but remember, it is the child's homework.  Give more encouragement than assistance.
  • Make a homework calendar or chart to help keep track of what is due when.
  • Follow through and be consistent in the enforcement of homework rules.
  • Offer praise and positive feedback for academic work, effort and accomplishments.
  • Set a good example.
  • Support your child's school, get involved, volunteer and show your interest.  The more involved you are, the more involved your child will be.
  • Support your child's teacher, volunteer in the classroom, and keep an open line of communication with your child's teacher.
  • Spend time daily talking and listening to your child about school, about what they're learning, and about their interests and feelings.
  • Limit and monitor your child's television watching. Plan your family viewing. Watch TV with your child and talk about the shows together.  Offer alternatives to TV such as games, sports, reading and writing.
  • Make sure you child gets healthy meals, proper sleep and enough exercise.

 ABSENCES

This year, schools in Kentucky will receive money based on their average daily attendance (ADA) instead of their enrollment as it has been in years past.   It is very important that you make every effort to see that your child is at school each day.  If possible, please avoid vacations during the school year and around holidays.

If a student is absent from one and one half to three hours, they will be counted as tardy.  If a student is absent from three to four and one half hours, they will be counted as absent for one half day.  A student who is absent for more than four hours will be counted as absent for that day. Upon returning, students are required to bring a note signed by their parent or guardian, explaining the reason for their absence.  Students with excused absences may be given work to make up.  Excused absences are: illness, death or severe illness in immediate family, a reasonable number of religious holidays to be approved prior to the absence, medical and dental appointments, family emergencies, pre-approved field trips and school activities, and special cases/circumstances pre-approved by the principal.  All other absences will be considered unexcused, no make-up work will be provided and each day of unexcused absence will count toward truancy referrals.

If a student has an excused absence, class assignments will be given to the student upon returning to school. A student will be given the same number of days absent, plus one, to complete and return the assignments. When absent for two or more days, a parent may call the office within one hour of the beginning of the school day and the assignments will be prepared to be picked up at the end of that day. If the school is notified after the first hour of school, the assignments may be picked up on the next school day.

  BICYCLES

Students who are at least 7 years old and who are not bus riders may ride their bicycles to school.  Students should bring permission slips with parental signatures to their teacher.  We recommend reviewing safety with your child, being sure the bicycle is in good working order, and requiring your child to wear a safety helmet.   Bicycle racks are provided and for security reasons, a bicycle lock is suggested.

  BUS RIDERS

Students must ride their assigned bus.  If a child needs to ride a different bus on a temporary basis, the child should bring a parent note explaining the circumstances and the principal will grant special permission.  Students are required to behave responsibly on school buses to permit the driver to drive safely without distraction.  The school bus driver has direct supervision and direction over the conduct of the student riders.

  CONFERENCES

Parents will be asked to attend a minimum of one conference per school year. Conferences can be one-on-one meetings with teachers, group parent meetings, or telephone conferences. The teachers will request that you attend more conferences if needed. Parents may request a conference any time they feel one is needed. Parent-teacher communication is encouraged and benefits the student’s educational experience.

  DINING ROOM

Students' names are entered in a database where the cost of each meal is debited as they come through the line.  Please note with your child that there are extra desserts, beverages, fruits and snack items that are available at an additional charge in the serving line.  If you prefer your child not purchase such extras please contact the dining room staff.
Parents may prepay any amount and it will be recorded in the student's personal account.  Account deposits will be accepted in the dining room in the morning before classes begin. Checks should be made payable to Stonewall Elementary Dining Room.
Occasionally, you may wish to have lunch with your child.  Remember to obtain a visitor’s badge, sign in and out of the office, and be sure your child includes you in the morning lunch count.  "Fast food" lunches are not permitted.
Students will be told when their account balances are low. Please be sure to keep your child’s account current. If a student does not have enough money in their account, one lunch will be served to the student that day. Thereafter, only a nutritious snack will be provided until the account has been brought up to date.
Each student will receive a monthly lunch/breakfast menu.   There is a link to the lunch menu here and at the cafeteria section of our site.

  PRICES

Student lunch $1.50  Student Breakfast $1.10

Applications for free or reduced priced lunches will be sent home on the first day of school and may be obtained anytime in the office.

A breakfast program is available for all students and faculty. Breakfast is served daily from 7:00 to 7:25 a.m.

 GUIDANCE

The child guidance specialist is a specially trained, certified professional available to help teachers, parents and students.  Students at each level are involved in an on-going guidance program and counseled both individually and in small groups.  Parents may consult with the guidance specialist, Mrs. Covington at 381-3085 anytime a need arises.

  HEALTH/ILLNESS AT SCHOOL

Please inform the teacher and health nurse of any chronic health problem, handicaps, or restrictions.  If your child becomes ill at school, you will be called immediately.  We must have your phone number and an emergency number on file in the office.  Please notify us of any phone number changes.
If your child is ill, please keep them at home until they are well.  Sick students cannot work as well as usual and they spread germs to other students.
Below is a list of guidelines to help you decide whether to keep your child home:

  • A temperature of 100 degrees or over is a sure sign to keep your child home. Giving a fever reducer and sending the child to school will almost guarantee a call from the school when the medicine wears off, as well as exposing other students to your child's illness.
  • If your child vomited or had diarrhea during the previous evening or night, please keep your child home.
  • Keep your child home if he/she has heavy nasal congestion and/or a frequent cough.
  • If your child is diagnosed with a contagious disease, such as strep, the child should be on prescribed antibiotics for 24 hours before returning to school.
  • A blistery rash, especially if accompanied by fever and a history of exposure, may be chicken pox. Your child will need to stay home until all areas are scabbed, usually 6-7 days.

INCLEMENT WEATHER

Inclement weather may necessitate a delayed start, cancellation, or early dismissal.   All changes in schedule are announced on the School Cable Channel 13 and by the local media.  In case of early dismissal, please plan with your child beforehand and let the school know of any alternative plans.

 LOST AND FOUND

All items found at school are placed in the lost and found box in the front lobby.  Parents are encouraged to check the area frequently and to mark all lunch boxes, jackets, sweaters, etc. with the student's name.  Unclaimed items are donated periodically to needy students at other Fayette County schools.

  MEDICATION

Whenever possible medicines should be taken at home.  Students may take medication brought from home with written parental request, using the Medication Authorization Form.  ‘The following conditions must be met: medication must be in the original prescription container which should include the physician's or dentist's directions for dispensing, or in the original over-the-counter medicine container with the written order of the physician or dentist attached.  Information listed on the container shall include the student's name, the prescribed dosage of medicine and the time it should be given.

 "PARENT HELPS" INFORMATION

Outside the office, in the front hallway is a rack that is filled with current school information as well as pertinent parenting materials.  Feel free to utilize these resources.

PARKING LOT SAFETY

The parking lot at Stonewall is a very busy place!  For this reason, parents are urged to allow their students to ride the bus or walk to school in order to reduce the traffic congestion.  The parking lot has been re-striped in order to add parking places, and the drop off/pick up is one lane.  Cars will be unable to pass in this lane.  We urge all parents to drive slowly, use caution, and be courteous to other drivers and our neighbors. PLEASE REMEMBER:

  • No cars may drop off, pick up, or park in the parking lanes or the bus lane.
  • Car riders may enter the building through the cafeteria doors from the front porch at 7:00 a.m. and through the front doors of the school after 7:15 a.m.
  • There is a one-lane flow for AM drop-off and PM pick-up in front of the school.  DO NOT PARK IN THIS LANE as it results in unnecessary congestion.
  • Students should enter and exit the vehicle on the sidewalk side, and cross the parking lot only with an adult.
  • Please note the NO PARKING signs along the street.  When cars park in these areas, exiting the parking lot is unsafe.  These areas are subject to being ticketed by the police.
  • There is NO LEFT TURN out of the parking lot in the morning from 7:00-7:30a.m.

PICKING UP A STUDENT EARLY FROM SCHOOL

Sometimes it is necessary for the parents, guardian, or someone else to pick up a student before school is dismissed.  The person picking up the student must check in the office and sign the form designed for this purpose.  The office will check to see that the person picking up the student has the parent's permission to do so. Photo identification will be checked to make sure it matches the name on the form before any child is released to that person. If the early dismissal is approved, the student will be called to the office.  No one is allowed to go to the classroom, to the playground, or to a special class to pick up a student for early dismissal.   Any student who is picked up early from school will be counted as tardy.

 ROTATING SCHEDULE

All special classes (Art, Music, Technology, Science, P.E., Library, Intermediate Resource) are on a rotating schedule.  This means the schedule (days 1-6) starts on the 1st day of school and will continually rotate every day the students are in school.  If a Friday is off of school, then the Monday will be the next day after Thursday.  In the past we have scheduled classes on specific days of the week, but the students tended to miss a lot of their Friday and Monday special classes.  The rotating schedule prevents this.  The days will be posted in the monthly newsletter to help everyone keep up with the schedule.

SECURITY

Parents please note that all outside doors around the school are locked. Bus riders are admitted into the building in the morning through the dining room. Everyone else must use the front doors. Students, parents, and visitors arriving after 7:30 a.m. will have to ring the buzzer in order to be admitted. Everyone entering the school must check in the office. Security cameras at the front entrance will also be in operation.

  SCHOOL-BASED DECISION MAKING COUNCIL (SBDM)

Stonewall Elementary has a School-Based Decision Making (SBDM) council made up of three teachers, two parents and the principal.  The Council is the governing body for the school.  It determines school policy and all other matters pertinent to the operation of the school.  Meetings are held monthly, usually on the third Tuesday of the month at 5:30 pm, in the school library and are open to all faculty, staff, parents and community of Stonewall Elementary.  Please phone the principal if you have an agenda item.  There is also a suggestion box in the office for your input. The minutes from each meeting are posted in the parent folder in the school library and also on the Stonewall web site in the SBDM section.
Stonewall teachers and parents also serve on the following committees that aid the council: Curriculum and Instruction, Technology, Professional Development, Climate, Public Relations, Social, and Writing.  Parents are encouraged to join the committee of their choice.  Committees meet on the first Tuesday of the month at 2:40 pm.  Committee minutes are posted on the Stonewall web site in the SBDM section.
The two parents on the SBDM council are elected in April by Stonewall parents, serve a one-year term and are eligible for re-election.  All parents are encouraged to attend the meetings, become involved and vote for the representatives.

SATURDAY OPPORTUNITY AT STONEWALL (SOS)
(SATURDAY SCHOOL)

Stonewall’s staff is committed to helping students succeed academically. The SOS program provides an opportunity for students in the second through fifth grades to complete any missing or unsatisfactory assignments. Failure to participate in this program will result in receiving a zero for the missing assignments. Students who fail any core content subjects may not be promoted to the next grade level.  The complete policy for SOS is in the SBDM section of our website.

With teacher recommendation, students meeting the following criteria will be expected to attend Saturday School:

  • Any student in grades 2 through 5 with a cumulative grade point average below a C in mathematics, reading, spelling, language, social studies, or science, generally occurring as a result of missing or late assignments or an incomplete writing portfolio.
  • Students who have turned in unsatisfactory work in the preceding week.
  • Students missing assignments in the preceding week.

The student’s homeroom teacher will send a written notice home no later than the Wednesday prior to the Saturday that the student is to participate in the program.  Prior to Saturday, a follow-up message will also be given by school personnel.

The SOS program, staffed by a certified teacher at a ratio of approximately 1 to 15, will be held on Saturdays from 8:00-11:00 a.m. in the school’s library.

Parents/guardians will be responsible for transportation to and from school. Doors will open to accept students at 7:45 a.m. and will be locked at 8:00 a.m. Students arriving after 8:00 a.m. will not be allowed entry and will receive a zero for any unfinished assignments.

If a student disrupts SOS with any misbehavior or refuses to follow teacher directions, the parent will be contacted to pick up the student, and a zero will be given on the assignment(s).

 DRESS CODE

The complete dress code policy is in the SBDM section. Students attending Stonewall Elementary will abide by the following dress code:

  • Garments with obscenities, vulgarities, profane language, double meanings, alcohol or cigarette advertisements, ethnically, sexually, or racially offensive stereotypical language or pictures are not allowed.
  • Students may not wear garments that expose their midriffs.
  • Students must wear pants, skirts, and shorts at waist level, and no part of any undergarment may be revealed as a result of fashion or style. Long shirts or sweaters will not alter this requirement.
  • Students may not wear shorts or skirts shorter than the fingertips of the child’s extended arm.
  • Students may not wear chains attached to wallets or pants.
  • Students may not wear hats or sunglasses inside the building.
  • Students may not wear facial jewelry, except in the ear.

HOMEWORK POLICY

The complete homework policy is in the SBDM section. The Staff at Stonewall believes homework is a meaningful extension of the curriculum that develops concepts taught in class. In order to encourage independent work, develop good study habits, and practice and apply learned skills, homework will be assigned on a regular basis. On the average, students in primary will have thirty to forty minutes of homework and intermediate students will have forty to sixty minutes of homework. The assignments given will vary according to what is developmentally appropriate for the student. Long term projects may require additional time.

Students are expected to take the assignments home, complete the work, and return the assignments as directed by the teacher. Homework not completed when assigned is of little value to the student and disrupts the classroom review. These are important processes in developing responsibility. Homework is part of the student’s total academic program.
