STONEWALL ELEMENTARY PTA NEWSLETTER

AUGUST, 2003

Dear Stonewall Families,

Welcome back to school.  I hope you had a wonderful summer and that you are looking forward to the 2003-04 school year.  The class of 2015 starts their formal education this year.

I hope that you take advantage of the opportunities that arise this year to take part in our school.  The PTA offers many ways to volunteer at Stonewall and I encourage all of you to become a member of this wonderful organization.  The PTA supports our students and staff in countless ways.  To see just one small way, take a look at our playgrounds.

The faculty and staff at Stonewall are looking forward to working with your family.  We will always try our best to make our school a welcoming environment that provides each student with a first-class education.  By working together in this endeavor, we will do great things.

    Wishing you the best,

James E. McCaw, Principal

Welcome back!!! I hope everyone had a great summer.  I’m very excited about this new school year.  I (mother of 3) know that this is a very hectic time of year.  Buying school supplies, orientations, teacher meetings, etc., take up a lot of our schedules.  But I want to challenge each and every one of you to take the time to attend this year’s Ice Cream Social.  This is the PTA’s first general assembly of the year and it promises to be a good time for the entire family.  We will have free ice cream with all the fixings and we will discuss the budget for the upcoming year.  Mr. McCaw will address “What’s New at Stonewall,” and provide you with an opportunity to join our team.  The membership committee will have a table in the front hall allowing you to sign up for your PTA.  We want every parent, grandparent, aunt, uncle, neighbor, staff member and teacher to be involved in your student’s school experience.  Hope to see you at the Ice Cream Social!

Calling all car riders  !!!

Did you know that we have about 700 students here at Stonewall Elementary?  That is a lot of people to get in and out of the building each day.  So, to make these transitions easier and safer, we need everyone to follow the guidelines below.  If you have ANY questions regarding the drop off/pick up procedures, please contact Mr. Hardy or Mr. McCaw.  Thanks in advance for your continuing cooperation in making Stonewall a safer place for our children.

A.M. Procedures:  If you are the first in line, please pull up to the far end of the porch covering.  If you are further back in the lane, please pull your car up as far as possible, so as to make room for those behind you.  Begin unloading your precious cargo as soon as possible. Kisses and hugs should be completed with backpacks and lunch boxes secured for departure.  PLEASE DO NOT OPEN THE DOOR UNTIL THE VEHICLE HAS COME TO A FULL AND COMPLETE STOP!  We have several PARENT VOLUNTEERS available to assist students with large loads of fifth grade textbooks, 3 ft second grade penguins, and various musical instruments.  Parent volunteers will also make an effort to assist younger students; however, all students need to make every effort to leave their vehicles in a timely fashion.  Parents should also have children exit the vehicle from the right side only.  If this is not possible due to safety restraints, the driver should get out of the vehicle and assist the child to the sidewalk.  If you are parking, you must accompany your child to the porch.  Please walk to the front of the covered porch and wait for Mr. McCaw to stop traffic for pedestrians.  Please do not walk between the cars at the far end of the drop off lane.  This is a dangerous place to be, especially for little ones.

P.M. Procedures:  The school bell rings at 2:20 p.m., however, your child will not be rushing out to the car at that time.  Bus riders will be dismissed first so that our buses are on time for their next route.  ESP, car riders, and walkers are dismissed next.  Younger children are generally dismissed first.  If you are entering the pick up lane, please pull forward as far as possible.  Remember that others in front of you may have children who will be dismissed last.  Once you are in this lane, you will have to wait for the traffic to clear before exiting.  Also, please do not leave your car unattended for any reason.  If you choose to park in the parking lot, please do so only in designated parking spaces.  Please do not park on the grass, in the handicap spaces, on the end of the lanes or by blocking someone else.  Once parked, you must go to the porch to meet your child.  Students will not be allowed to leave the sidewalk and enter the parking lot unattended!!  Our parking lot can be very crowded and confusing in the afternoons and we want to ensure the safety of all concerned.

As always, parking spaces are at a premium.  You may also park on the street in front of the building and on either block.  Again, please remember to be careful.  There will be several staff members throughout the parking lot to assist in the direction of traffic.  Remember to make extra time during inclement weather.  Students will still be expected to arrive to school on time.  PLEASE FOLLOW THE PROCEDURES OUTLINED ABOVE SO THAT EVERYONE CAN HAVE A SMOOTH AND TIMELY TRANSITION AT SCHOOL.
